When is the best time to hold an event in Madrid?

The best times for a corporate event in Madrid are mid-April to June and mid-September to early November: mild temperatures, long days and the city running at full speed. Before you fix a date, cross-check three calendars: the weather, the 2027 public holidays and the trade fair and major event weeks.

In Madrid, the date of an event is decided between three calendars. The weather, which is continental, with hot summers and cold, dry winters. The public holidays, with long weekends that either empty the city or fill it with visitors. And the trade fairs and major events, which in certain weeks take the hotels before you do. This guide cross-checks all three so you can choose a date based on data. If you already have a date, it will help you work out what to prepare.

The short answer

Season Rating Ideal for Watch out for
Mid-April to June Very good Conventions, incentives, outdoor dinners, launches Mutua Madrid Open, San Isidro, Champions League final scheduled for 5 June 2027
July and August Fair for international groups, poor for a local audience Evening events, groups looking for availability Strong daytime heat, holidays in August
Mid-September to early November Very good Congresses, conventions, incentives, galas F1 Grand Prix, 12 October long weekend, large congresses
Mid-November to March Good for indoor events Meetings, kick-offs, congresses, company dinners FITUR, ARCOmadrid, Christmas, cold evenings

Four practical takeaways:

  • The difference between day and night is large. In May the average maximum is 22.2°C and the average minimum 11.3°C. An outdoor reception that starts in the sun may end with jackets on: plan for patio heaters or an adjoining indoor space.
  • Summer is dry. July and August average just 1.7 days of rain. The risk is not rain but heat: AEMET counts 17.5 clear days in July.
  • October and November are the wettest months, with 60 and 58 mm, spread over about 7 rainy days a month.
  • Winter brings frost but little snow. January averages 6.2 days of frost and 1 day of snow in the Retiro. In the mountains snow is another matter: useful for incentives, bad news for coaches without snow chains.

2027 public holidays in Madrid

The Community of Madrid has approved its 2027 working calendar with 12 regional public holidays. The city adds two local holidays set by the City Council.

Date Day Holiday What it means for your event
1 January Friday New Year's Day Long weekend; slow start to the year
6 January Wednesday Epiphany On the eve, 5 January, the Three Kings parade takes place in the evening
19 March Friday San José Three-day weekend, one week before Easter
25 March Thursday Maundy Thursday Easter week: lots of leisure travel and processions in the city
26 March Friday Good Friday
1 May Saturday Labour Day Falls at the weekend
16 August Monday Assumption (moved to Monday) Long weekend in the middle of the holiday season
12 October Tuesday Spain's National Day Many people are likely to take Monday 11 off
1 November Monday All Saints' Day Long weekend
6 December Monday Constitution Day Together with the 8th, a short week in December
8 December Wednesday Immaculate Conception
25 December Saturday Christmas Day Falls at the weekend

Source: Time Out Madrid on the calendar approved by the Community of Madrid. 2 May, the Community of Madrid's holiday, does not appear in 2027 because it falls on a Sunday.

The city's local holidays. Traditionally these are San Isidro, Madrid's patron saint, on 15 May, and the Virgen de la Almudena on 9 November. In 2027, 15 May falls on a Saturday and 9 November on a Tuesday. Check in the official gazette which days the City Council sets before fixing your date, because a local holiday on a Tuesday usually means many people take the Monday off as well.

Easter 2027. esMADRID places the celebrations from 19 to 28 March. For a congress or a convention with a Spanish audience, it is a week to avoid. For an international incentive, it can be an attraction.

Trade fairs, congresses and major events: when hotels fill up

Hotel pressure in Madrid is driven as much by sport and congresses as by IFEMA's trade fairs. For a sense of scale, in December 2025 the city had 860 hotel establishments open with 93,767 bed places, according to INE (Spain's national statistics office) data published by the City Council's Economic Observatory. An event with tens of thousands of visitors is felt across the whole city.

Pros and cons of each season

Spring (mid-April to June)

For: mild temperatures, long days, terraces open and parks at their best. It is the peak season for incentive travel and open-air dinners.

Against: April and May are among the months with the most rain days (6.7 and 7.3 on average). They coincide with the Mutua Madrid Open, San Isidro and, in 2027, the Champions League final. Strong competition for unique venues on Thursdays and Fridays.

What to do: book your unique venue 9 to 12 months ahead and plan a covered plan B for May.

Summer (July and August)

For: long, dry evenings, ideal for rooftops, courtyards and gardens. In August corporate demand drops and there is more room to negotiate.

Against: intense daytime heat, with average maximums above 31°C. In August some suppliers and many company teams are on holiday.

What to do: schedule outdoor sessions from sunset onwards, make sure the venue has proper air conditioning and confirm the availability of key suppliers.

Autumn (mid-September to early November)

For: the return to work brings a concentration of launches, back-to-business conventions and congresses. Pleasant temperatures until October.

Against: it is high season for congresses and corporate events. The F1 Grand Prix takes up a weekend in September and the 12 October long weekend affects local attendance.

What to do: fix your date as early as possible and avoid Grand Prix weekend unless it is part of the programme.

Winter (mid-November to March)

For: good availability outside FITUR, ARCOmadrid and Christmas. A festive atmosphere from late November: lights, markets and nativity scenes.

Against: cold, especially at night, and short days. December is the season for company dinners and venues fill up early.

What to do: for January and February, check the IFEMA calendar week by week. For December, book before the summer.

Which season suits each format?

What changes in production depending on the month

  • June to September: air conditioning, water, shade and evening schedules. Outdoors, staging and furniture that do not heat up in the sun.
  • November to March: a cloakroom with room for coats, heating in historic venues with high ceilings and short walks between coach and entrance.
  • Spring and autumn: a covered plan B for any outdoor session, especially in May, October and November.
  • Trade fair weeks: AV and transport suppliers are also in higher demand. Book them early.

How to spot hotel pressure before you book

  1. Check the IFEMA calendar for your dates and for the week before and after: trade fair build-ups also fill hotels.
  2. Look at the Madrid Convention Bureau congress calendar, which announces major international congresses.
  3. Check the esMADRID events calendar for matches, concerts, marathons and festivals.
  4. Ask two or three hotels for availability across several weeks at once. The difference in terms between weeks will show you where the pressure is.
  5. Bear in mind long weekends, which change the type of visitor and the availability of suppliers.

Checklist for fixing your date

  • The month's weather according to AEMET, and a plan B for anything outdoors.
  • 2027 regional and local holidays, and the long weekends they create.
  • IFEMA trade fairs in your chosen week and the weeks either side.
  • Major sports or music events in the city.
  • Announced international congresses.
  • School holidays and your attendees' holiday periods.
  • Availability of the key venue and the main hotel.
  • Time to confirm attendees before the cut-off dates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for an event in Madrid?

May, June, late September and October are the most balanced. According to the climate normals from AEMET, the Spanish weather agency, for the Retiro station, May has a mean temperature of 16.7°C and October 15.1°C. June already rises to an average maximum of 28.2°C, very pleasant for outdoor events in the evening.

Is Madrid very hot in summer?

Yes. July is the hottest month, with an average maximum of 32.1°C in the Retiro, followed by August at 31.3°C. Both are very dry and sunny. Outdoor events work from late afternoon into the night; during the day, air-conditioned indoor spaces are the better choice.

Is August a good time for an event in Madrid?

For a local audience, generally not: many Spanish companies and teams are on holiday and the city slows down. It can work for international groups looking for availability, always with an indoor programme during the day. The festivities of San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and La Paloma take up the first half of the month.

What are the 2027 public holidays in the Community of Madrid?

1 and 6 January, 19 March (San José), 25 and 26 March (Maundy Thursday and Good Friday), 1 May, 16 August (Assumption, moved to the Monday), 12 October, 1 November, 6 and 8 December and 25 December. 2 May, the Community of Madrid's own holiday, falls on a Sunday. The city adds two local holidays.

Which weeks should I avoid in Madrid in 2027?

FITUR week (20 to 24 January), ARCOmadrid (3 to 7 March), the Mutua Madrid Open (19 April to 2 May), the Champions League final scheduled for 5 June and the Formula 1 Grand Prix (10 to 12 September), as well as Easter week and long weekends around public holidays.

Does it rain a lot in Madrid?

Not much. The Retiro records an average of 421 mm a year over about 59 days with at least 1 mm of rain, according to AEMET. The wettest months are October, November, December and May. Even so, any outdoor event needs a covered plan B.

Is winter a good time for an event in Madrid?

For indoor events, yes. It is cold and dry: in January the average minimum is 2.7°C and there are about 6 days of frost. Outside FITUR and the Christmas weeks, hotels and venues usually have more availability. For outdoor events, hold them in daylight and with heating.
