Madrid as a congress destination
In 2025 Madrid ranked thirteenth in the world for international association meetings, with 108 congresses according to the ICCA ranking, and the Madrid Convention Bureau counted 54,784 meetings in the city in 2024. Many of the large congresses take place at the IFEMA exhibition centre, but the city also has hotels with high-capacity auditoriums and large-format cinema screens that work well for plenaries. Choosing well between them is the first big decision for a congress or a large-format convention.
IFEMA MADRID and its Palacio Municipal
The IFEMA MADRID exhibition centre is in Campo de las Naciones, next to the airport. According to IFEMA, it has more than 200,000 m² of exhibition space, a North convention centre with an auditorium for 1,100 people and 18 rooms, a South convention centre with an auditorium for 600 people and a total of 85 rooms across the site. It is the natural home for congresses with a large commercial exhibition and for international trade shows.
The Palacio Municipal de IFEMA MADRID is a congress building within that offer, on Avenida Capital de España. The Madrid Convention Bureau credits it with an Auditorium A of 1,812 seats, 32 rooms for groups of 20 to 350 people and a multipurpose space which, together with its foyers, holds 1,704 people for a banquet. The Feria de Madrid metro station is next to its entrance.
How to choose the venue
- Plenary capacity. Work with the capacity of the auditorium or main room as set, not the total capacity of the building.
- Parallel sessions. The number of rooms that can run at the same time, and their size.
- Commercial exhibition and posters. If sponsors are key, exhibition space matters as much as the auditorium.
- Accommodation. Hotels nearby or in the same building cut down daily transfers.
- Transport. Metro, rail, airport and real journey times at rush hour.
- Calendar. Avoid clashing with major trade shows unless you need them. See the Madrid trade show calendar 2027.
- Venue services. Ask which services the venue manages itself and which allow external suppliers.

Convention centre or hotel?
If your event has fewer than 1,000 people and does not need a large exhibition, a convention hotel usually handles it with less logistics, because it brings together rooms, meals and bedrooms. If you expect to grow, have a lot of industry presence or need more than ten parallel rooms, the IFEMA exhibition centre gives you more headroom. To plan the timeline, see the guide to organising a congress in Madrid and the convention centre comparison.
