Madrid convention centres compared: IFEMA, Palacio Municipal, Marriott Auditorium, Kinépolis and more

For large congresses and conventions, Madrid has four main venues: the IFEMA exhibition centre (200,000 m² and 85 rooms), its Palacio Municipal (1,719-seat auditorium and 32 rooms), the Madrid Marriott Auditorium (2,000-seat auditorium and 869 bedrooms) and Kinépolis (25 screens). We compare capacities, access and which format each one suits.

Madrid convention centres compared: IFEMA, Palacio Municipal, Marriott Auditorium, Kinépolis and more

Choosing the venue is the decision that shapes a congress or large convention more than any other: it sets the plenary capacity, the number of breakout rooms, where the exhibition goes and which hotels make sense. In Madrid, supply is split between the large IFEMA hub in Campo de las Naciones and venues spread across the city and its metropolitan area. This comparison brings together the figures published by IFEMA and Madrid Convention Bureau, and explains which type of event each venue suits.

Quick comparison of the main venues

Auditorio Sur 582 seats plus 12 wheelchair spaces
Vestíbulo Norte (North Foyer) 1,800 people for a cocktail reception, according to the MCB

What it suits. Congresses of more than 3,000 delegates with an exhibition, company conventions with a plenary in a hall, proprietary trade shows and events with bespoke set-ups. In 2027 it will host the EAO congress (5,000 expected attendees) and the ESCRS congress (10,000), according to Madrid Convention Bureau. For congresses of 300 to 1,000 people, the Centro de Convenciones Norte works as a congress centre within the exhibition centre.

Access. Avenida del Partenón, 5. Feria de Madrid metro station (line 8). The MCB places the exhibition centre 4 km from the airport and 8.5 km from Chamartín station, with 14,000 parking spaces.

Bear in mind. The exhibition centre runs to the rhythm of its trade show calendar. If a large show occupies adjoining halls, watch out for visitor flows and loading and unloading. Check our Madrid trade show and congress calendar 2027 before requesting a date.

IFEMA MADRID Palacio Municipal

What it is. A congress centre at Avenida Capital de España, 7, also in Campo de las Naciones, run by IFEMA since January 2019.

Key figures. According to IFEMA:

  • Auditorium A: 1,719 fixed seats plus 38 wheelchair spaces. Madrid Convention Bureau lists 1,812 theatre-style places for this room; the difference depends on the configuration.
  • 32 rooms with capacities from a few dozen to 385 people theatre-style. The largest, Madrid and Roma, are 428 m² each.
  • Espacio Polivalente (multipurpose space) of 2,445 m², designed for exhibitions and catering. Combined with the foyers, it seats 1,704 for a banquet, according to the MCB.
  • More than 30,000 m² of usable space and its own car park.

What it suits. National and international congresses of 800 to 2,000 delegates with many parallel sessions. It is the venue for the EDCTP Forum (April 2027, 1,500 participants) and the AVEPA congress (November 2027, 1,800), according to the MCB.

Access. Feria de Madrid station (line 8), next to the main entrance. 4 km from the airport according to the MCB.

Madrid Marriott Auditorium Hotel & Conference Center

What it is. An 869-room hotel with its own congress centre, the Centro de Congresos Príncipe Felipe, on the ground floor. It is at Avenida de Aragón, 400, next to the airport.

Key figures. According to Madrid Convention Bureau:

  • An auditorium of 2,140 m² with a 9.8 m ceiling and 2,000 theatre-style places.
  • Exhibition galleries of 2,471 m², with 1,100 theatre-style places.
  • 54 open-plan, modular rooms, plus 25 additional rooms.
  • 1,000 parking spaces. 5 km from the airport; the nearest railway station, in Coslada, is 3 km away.

What it suits. Conventions and congresses of 800 to 2,000 people that want the whole group under one roof: plenary, breakout rooms, meals and bedrooms. In 2027 it hosts the IATA Ground Handling Conference (May, more than 800 delegates) and the FIDES conference (September, 2,000 attendees).

Bear in mind. It is not in the city centre. Dinners outside the hotel need coaches. In return, you save time with delegates arriving by air.

Kinépolis Madrid

What it is. A cinema complex in the Ciudad de la Imagen, in Pozuelo de Alarcón, with an events and congress area.

Key figures. According to Madrid Convention Bureau:

  • 25 screens for 100 to 1,000 people; Screen 25 has 1,000 theatre-style seats.
  • Espacio Lumière of 1,675 m², for 1,500 people at a cocktail reception and 800 at a banquet.

  • Ciudad del Cine light rail stop at the door. 15 km from Atocha and 35 km from the airport.

What it suits. Congresses with many parallel sessions that need comfortable seating and high-quality projection, sales conventions and product launches with video content. The 6th International Student Conference expects 2,500 attendees there in February 2027.

Bear in mind. It is outside the city. It works very well for groups arriving by car or coach; for international delegates, arrange shuttles from the hotels.

Madrid Arena (Pabellón Multiusos I, Casa de Campo)

What it is. A multipurpose arena on Avenida de Portugal, in the Casa de Campo.

Key figures. According to the MCB: 30,000 m², a 14 m ceiling, 10,276 people theatre-style and 3,500 at a banquet. Metro: Alto de Extremadura and Puerta del Ángel (line 6) and Lago (line 10). 7 km from the city centre and 25 km from the airport.

What it suits. Very large convention plenaries, dinners for thousands and brand events with staging. It is not a congress centre: breakout rooms have to be built.

Mid-sized and unique venues for congresses

Not every congress needs IFEMA. For 200 to 800 people there are venues with more character or a better location:

Venue Key figure Best for
Galería de Cristal, Palacio de Cibeles 2,420 m² and 25 m high; 600 theatre-style, 800 banquet, 1,200 cocktail Summits, award ceremonies, gala dinners in the city centre
Espacio Ventas Two rooms of around 300 m² for 300 theatre-style and nine syndicate rooms Conferences and national congresses of up to 300
COEM (Colegio de Odontólogos y Estomatólogos) 6 rooms, 430 people Mid-sized healthcare congresses
Universities and technical schools Main lecture halls and faculty rooms Academic congresses of 100 to 800
Convention hotels Plenary and bedrooms in the same building Company conventions of 200 to 1,500

In October 2027 the Galería de Cristal will host Black Swan Summit Spain with 1,500 expected attendees, according to the MCB. If your congress calls for a hotel with a large ballroom, the Madrid ballroom at the RIU Plaza España covers 1,593 m² and holds 1,540 people theatre-style, according to the MCB. We compare it with others in the best convention hotels in Madrid.

Access: how delegates get there

In Madrid, the venue's location drives the logistics. The IFEMA area is next to the airport: the MCB places the exhibition centre and the Palacio Municipal 4 km from Barajas, and the Marriott Auditorium 5 km away. That is ideal for international congresses with delegates flying in and out, but it means planning transfers to the city centre for dinners.

City-centre venues such as the Galería de Cristal have a metro station at the door and hotels within walking distance, but less floor space. Those to the west, such as Kinépolis and Madrid Arena, have plenty of parking and suit groups arriving by road.

For a multi-day congress at IFEMA, we recommend accommodating most of the group on a single metro line or in hotels with a shuttle, and booking coaches only for the social programme.

Production tips for large venues

  • Ask for the technical plan before you confirm. Rigging points, power supply, loading access and clear heights.
  • Allow for build-up time. In an empty hall, the plenary, exhibition and catering areas are built from scratch.
  • Check for exclusive services. Catering, AV and security may be restricted to the venue's own suppliers.
  • Signage from the transport stop. In large venues, delegates get lost between the metro and registration.
  • Contingency plan. Back-up rooms, a generator and an evacuation protocol shared with the venue.

Common mistakes when choosing a venue in Madrid

  • Choosing on plenary capacity and forgetting the breakouts. A congress of 1,500 people with eight simultaneous sessions needs eight rooms free at the same time, at the right capacity, every day.
  • Not checking dates against IFEMA. Even if your venue is not IFEMA, a large trade show or a congress of 10,000 delegates fills the hotels near the airport and along the Castellana.
  • Underestimating transfers. Between Campo de las Naciones and the city centre you need to allow for early-evening traffic. If dinner is in the centre, schedule coach departures with time to spare.
  • Taking brochure figures at face value. We have seen in this very guide that two official sources publish different capacities for the same room. Always ask for the floor plan with your layout.
  • Forgetting the exhibition. If sponsors are funding the budget, the exhibition has to sit on the route to the coffee break, not on a separate floor.

What is the difference between IFEMA and the Palacio Municipal?

Both are run by IFEMA MADRID and are in Campo de las Naciones, but they are separate buildings. The exhibition centre is the complex of halls with two convention centres. The Palacio Municipal, on Avenida Capital de España, is a congress centre with a 1,719-seat auditorium, 32 rooms and more than 30,000 m² of usable space.

Which venue has the largest auditorium?

Among the venues in this comparison with a fixed auditorium, the Madrid Marriott Auditorium advertises a 2,000-seat theatre-style auditorium, according to Madrid Convention Bureau. Auditorium A at the Palacio Municipal has 1,719 fixed seats plus 38 wheelchair spaces, according to IFEMA. For larger audiences in a single room you need to set up an IFEMA hall or the Madrid Arena.

How do I get to IFEMA from the airport?

IFEMA is about 4 km from Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport and has its own metro station, Feria de Madrid, on line 8, next to the main entrance. According to Madrid Convention Bureau, the metro takes around 3 minutes from the exhibition centre to the airport.

Is Kinépolis suitable for congresses?

Yes, for congresses and conventions that need many rooms with tiered seating and projection. Kinépolis Madrid, in Pozuelo de Alarcón, has 25 screens, one of them for 1,000 people theatre-style, the 1,675 m² Espacio Lumière and more than 3,000 parking spaces, according to Madrid Convention Bureau.

Which venue should I choose for a convention of 1,500 people?

The natural options are the Madrid Marriott Auditorium (2,000-seat auditorium and a hotel in the same building), IFEMA's Palacio Municipal (1,719 seats) and an IFEMA hall if you want the plenary and the exhibition together. In the city centre, the Madrid ballroom at the RIU Plaza España holds 1,540 people theatre-style.

How far ahead should I book a convention centre in Madrid?

Major international congresses book years in advance. For a corporate convention of 500 to 2,000 people, work with 12 to 24 months, and check the IFEMA trade show calendar first: a large show can take over the exhibition centre and the surrounding hotels.
