Madrid or Barcelona for your event? An honest comparison with data

Madrid and Barcelona are Spain's two major MICE destinations and they do not compete on the same things. Madrid has more air passengers, more hotels, lower average rates and no tourist tax. Barcelona has the sea, more international congresses in the ICCA ranking and a milder climate. We work in both cities: here is the data to help you choose.

The hotel figures are for 2024 and refer to hotel establishments as defined by INE, Spain's national statistics office. The climate data are 1981-2010 climate normals from different stations: the Retiro, in central Madrid, and El Prat airport, by the sea.

Connections: how your group gets there

Madrid is Spain's largest airport by passengers. In 2025 Barajas handled 68.18 million, 51.39 million of them on international flights, according to Aena. The express bus links the airport with the city centre 24 hours a day. Madrid is also the hub of Spain's high-speed rail network: according to Turespaña, Valencia is about 110 minutes away and Barcelona and Seville from about 2 hours 30 minutes.

Barcelona closed 2025 with 57.48 million passengers at El Prat, also a record, according to Aena. The airport is right next to the city and the AVE high-speed train connects it with Madrid.

What it means for your event: check the direct routes from your attendees' home cities, because that is what really decides it. If they mostly come from Europe, both cities work. If part of the group is travelling by train from other Spanish cities, Madrid's central position in the high-speed network usually cuts journey times.

Hotels: volume, occupancy and price

The two cities have a similar hotel stock in terms of bed places. Madrid has more establishments and Barcelona slightly more bed places, with 86,300 and 92,400 respectively in 2024. The difference lies in the pressure: Barcelona had 68% occupancy and Madrid 61%, and the average daily rate was €173 against €153, according to INE data published by Hosteltur.

In practice, Madrid's lower average occupancy usually leaves more room to negotiate outside trade fair and major event weeks. Barcelona has seafront hotels; Madrid concentrates hotels with large ballrooms on the Castellana, around Plaza de España and in the IFEMA area, such as the Madrid Marriott Auditorium, with capacity for 2,000 people according to the Madrid Convention Bureau. We compare them in detail in convention hotels in Madrid.

Tourist tax: the difference most visible in the budget

Madrid does not charge a tax on tourist stays. The mayor ruled it out in 2024 and, as at October 2026, it has still not been introduced. Barcelona does charge one: since April 2026, €12 per person per night in a 5-star hotel and €8.40 in a 4-star, for up to seven nights. That figure combines the Catalan regional tax under Law 2/2026 and Barcelona's municipal surcharge. It is charged per guest on top of the room rate, so it is a separate line in any group budget.

Group Nights Hotel Tax in Barcelona Tax in Madrid
100 people 2 4-star €1,680 €0
200 people 3 5-star €7,200 €0
500 people 3 4-star €12,600 €0

This is a straightforward calculation using the current published rates. It does not decide the city on its own, but for large groups it carries weight. We break down every budget line in how much does a convention in Madrid cost.

Exhibition and convention centres

Madrid has IFEMA, which esMADRID places among the five most important trade fair institutions in Europe: 13 halls of between 5,400 and 21,600 m², according to IFEMA, and about 240,000 m² of exhibition space according to esMADRID. Next to it, IFEMA Palacio Municipal has an auditorium with 1,719 fixed seats plus 38 wheelchair spaces and 28 rooms. The city also has hotels with large ballrooms and venues such as the Pabellón de Cristal in the Casa de Campo and the Caja Mágica. They are all set out in the comparison of Madrid convention centres.

Barcelona has Fira Gran Via, with 240,000 m² of gross exhibition space in 8 halls, the Montjuïc site right in the city centre and the CCIB, with 100,000 m² and a 3,082-seat auditorium, by the sea in Diagonal Mar.

What it means for your event: for a trade fair or a congress with a very large commercial exhibition, both cities have the capacity. For a congress of 2,000 to 3,000 people in a single auditorium, the CCIB has the largest of the rooms mentioned here. For a convention of 500 to 1,700 people, Madrid offers the Palacio Municipal and several hotels with large ballrooms.

In spring the two cities are very similar. In summer Madrid is clearly hotter during the day and drier. In winter Madrid is colder at night. In autumn Barcelona keeps its good weather for longer, but its wettest months are September and October, with storms. There is a month-by-month breakdown in the best time for events in Madrid.

City profile and type of event

Madrid is the Spanish capital and the seat of national institutions. That makes it a natural choice for events involving government, meetings with public bodies, summits and congresses with institutional backing: in November 2026 it hosts the 30th Ibero-American Summit, according to esMADRID. IFEMA hosts FITUR and ARCOmadrid, and in 2026 the city welcomes the ESMO oncology congress for the fourth time. The Madrid Convention Bureau highlights that Madrid was named Europe's best meetings destination at the World Travel Awards 2025 for the fifth year running.

Barcelona has a very strong profile in technology and science. It hosts MWC, which brought together almost 105,000 attendees in 2026 according to the GSMA, and ISE. In 2025 the destination recorded 1,992 meetings with 683,783 delegates, according to Turisme de Barcelona.

Type of event Madrid Barcelona
International medical or scientific congress Very good option, with IFEMA Very good option, with the CCIB and Fira
National sales convention Very good: hub of the high-speed rail network Good
International convention for 300 to 1,000 people Very good Very good
Cultural incentive Paseo del Prado museums, flamenco, day trips to World Heritage cities Modernisme, Gaudí, architecture and the sea
Sea or sailing incentive No Very good
Institutional event Very good Good
Brand event during a global tech trade fair Depends on the fair Very good during MWC and ISE

Culture and social programme

In Madrid, the Landscape of Light, which joins the Paseo del Prado and the Retiro, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2021, and the Prado, the Thyssen and the Reina Sofía all sit along that axis. The city has a wide choice of flamenco tablaos and two stadiums that host corporate events, the Bernabéu and the Metropolitano. Outside the city, esMADRID counts nine World Heritage sites less than two hours away, and Toledo and Segovia are about 25 minutes by AVE. There are detailed itineraries in incentive travel in Madrid and venues for the special dinner in unique venues by capacity.

In Barcelona, the social programme revolves around Modernisme, the sea, Catalan food and day trips to places such as Montserrat, the Penedès or the Costa Brava. Our sister website explains it in MICE in Barcelona.

Seven questions to help you decide

Before you look at hotels, answer these questions. They usually tip the balance more than any ranking:

  1. Where are your attendees coming from? Check direct flights and frequencies from the three or four main home cities. If most are travelling from within Spain, compare train times as well.
  2. How many are there and what format do you need? A congress of 3,000 people in a single auditorium and a convention of 400 in a hotel need very different venues.
  3. On what dates? Cross-check your dates with the IFEMA and Fira de Barcelona trade fairs. MWC week in Barcelona or FITUR week in Madrid completely changes availability and price.
  4. How many nights? The more nights, the more Barcelona's tourist tax weighs on the total.
  5. What should the group experience outside the meeting rooms? The sea and Modernisme, or museums, flamenco and historic cities an hour away.
  6. Are local institutions or partners involved? Public sponsorship, a scientific society or your subsidiary's head office can decide the city.
  7. Which season? In July, Madrid is hotter during the day; in October, Barcelona has more average rainfall.

With these answers, the comparison stops being a matter of taste and becomes a decision based on data.

What if you do not have to choose?

With about two and a half hours by AVE between them, the two cities can be combined. These formats work well:

  • Congress in one city and post-tour in the other. For example, a congress in Barcelona and two days of incentive in Madrid with Toledo, or the other way round.
  • Two-stop roadshow. The same presentation to clients or partners in Madrid and Barcelona on consecutive days.
  • Leadership meeting in Madrid and convention in Barcelona, or the other way round, depending on where most of the team is based.

In these cases we coordinate the whole programme from within the group: train transfers, luggage, hotels in both cities and a single production team.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for a congress, Madrid or Barcelona?

It depends on the congress. Barcelona ranks third in the world in the ICCA 2025 ranking with 166 international association meetings and has the CCIB and Fira Gran Via. Madrid ranks thirteenth with 108, has IFEMA and more air connections. For congresses with a very large commercial exhibition, both have first-class venues.

Is Madrid or Barcelona cheaper for a convention?

According to INE data for 2024, the average daily hotel rate was €153 in Madrid and €173 in Barcelona. In addition, Madrid has no tourist tax and Barcelona does: €12 per person per night in a 5-star hotel and €8.40 in a 4-star since April 2026. The final cost depends on dates, venue and production.

Which city has better air connections?

Madrid-Barajas handled 68.18 million passengers in 2025, 51.39 million of them international, and Barcelona-El Prat 57.48 million, according to Aena, the Spanish airport operator. Both have direct flights to Europe and to the main long-haul markets.

How long is the train journey between Madrid and Barcelona?

From about 2 hours 30 minutes by high-speed train, according to Turespaña. That makes it possible to combine both cities in one programme: for example, a congress in one and a post-event incentive in the other.

Which city has the better climate for events?

Barcelona is milder: according to AEMET, its annual mean at the airport is 16.1°C, with an average August maximum of 28.5°C. Madrid is more continental: a mean of 15.0°C in the Retiro, an average July maximum of 32.1°C and an average January minimum of 2.7°C. Madrid has less rain over the year, 421 mm against 588.

Do you organise events in both cities?

Yes. ECM is MC Group's brand for Madrid and ECB its brand for Barcelona. The same group team works in both cities, with offices in Madrid and Barcelona, and helps you choose the one that best fits your event.
